With the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a supportive role, Limassol hosted earlier this the 1st Study Group with Industry (125th European Study Group with Industry), organized by the Μathematics for Industry Network - ΜΙΝΕΤ (www.mi-network.org), which brings together 31 countries, and the Cyprus University of Technology.
Addressing the conference, Limassol Chamber President Costas Galatariotis commended the holding of this event in Cyprus for the first time, noting that it had started in Oxford in 1968 before moving on, quite successfully, to more than 20 countries.
Highlighting the impeccable cooperation between the Chamber and the Cyprus University of Technology, Mr. Galatariotis noted that finding solutions to problems confronting the business community is a fundamental objective of the Chamber and to the extent that the Study Group with Industry aims at solving problems, there is indeed identity of objectives. What’s really important, he said, is the outcome and, as such, any method is welcome, pointing out, moreover, that the conference represented a practical implementation of the highly desirable connection of academia with industry.
The whole philosophy of the Study Group with Industry revolves around the optimum use of mathematics-related knowledge to address issues facing the industrial sector.
In addition to the Limassol Chamber President, addressing the event were the Rector of the Cyprus University of Technology, Andreas Anayiotos, and the Coordinator in charge of European Affairs at the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Andreas Karagiorgis.
There followed brief presentations by international experts on what it takes for mutually beneficial cooperation between universities and businesses through mathematics, as well as presentations of business problems requiring solutions by four selected organizations, including two member-companies of the Limassol Chamber.
Cyprus's 1st Study Group with Industry completed its mission four days later, with the announcement of its findings in relation to the problems that it was called upon to tackle.
