Evagoras Lanitis Avenue, within the boundaries of the Limassol Municipality (from 1st April Avenue to G. Kranidiotis Avenue), appears to be the most advanced section, in procedural terms, of the five sections of the Northern Limassol Bypass (Parallel), with a total estimated cost of around €170 million, possibly up to €200 million. The sections of the Northern Parallel are being developed independently and are at different stages of maturity, while the Minister of Transport recently stated that the section in the Kourion Municipality is likely to start first, before the end of 2026.
The road, considered of primary importance and running north of Limassol, from the Amathus Municipality in the east to the Kourion Municipality in the west, has been included in the Limassol Local Plan since 1990. Its five sections have been designated as Urban Planning Projects and are financed by the Department of Town Planning and Housing (DTPH).
According to information from “Entrepreneurial Limassol”, for the section in the Amathounta Municipality, from the junction with the Germasogeia bypass road to Armenia Street in Agios Athanasios, a Regulatory Plan has been prepared and approved by the Technical Committee of the Traffic Problems Resolution Authority. At the same time, a Project Concept Note (PCN) was prepared, which has not yet been approved by the General Directorate of Growth, as the preliminary cost is estimated to exceed €15 million. For this reason, a Feasibility Study has been requested, for which a tender is expected to be announced. The total cost is estimated at €18 million, excluding expropriation costs.
The section from Armenia Street to 1st April Avenue presents particular technical challenges due to significant elevation differences and ravines. The DTPH requested that the Limassol Municipality carry out detailed surveying and create a terrain model so that the Department of Public Works (DPW) can examine alternative alignment solutions. In this section, due to the geomorphology, the horizontal and longitudinal alignments are being re-examined for part of it, aiming to optimize the project and avoid major engineering works. It is estimated that by the end of the year, a proposal will be available for related decisions.
For Evagoras Lanitis Avenue, from 1st April Avenue to G. Kranidiotis Avenue, a Regulatory Plan has been prepared, while Construction Plans are underway by the DPW, along with the study of required flood protection works by the Limassol Water Development Department. The DTPH is promoting the updating of the PCN and the environmental opinion, while the Department of Lands and Surveys is preparing the Expropriation Plans. The tender announcement is expected in the third quarter of 2026. The construction cost is estimated at €32 million, of which €22 million concerns flood protection works.
The fourth section concerns Synergatismou Avenue, within the boundaries of the Polemidia Municipality, from G. Kranidiotis Avenue to Nikaia Avenue, including the upgrade of a large part of the latter. The Regulatory Plan has been approved, and the Construction Plans are being prepared. The tender is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, with an estimated cost of €30 million, excluding expropriations.
Finally, for the section from Nikaia Avenue to Tasos Isaak Avenue, within the Kourion Municipality, the local authority has undertaken the preparation of all required studies. According to the Mayor of Kourion, Mr. Pantelis Georgiou, the project has been divided into three phases, with priority given to the first, which will connect Nikaia Avenue with Alpeon Street, relieving heavy traffic to and from the port and industrial areas.
At a technical level, the project’s horizontal plan has been completed, and its approval is expected by the end of the first half of 2026. The Municipality aims to have all studies completed by the end of the year so that it will be ready to issue tenders for the first section, despite uncertainties caused by the lack of budgetary allocations in the state budget.
