A new ski centre is under construction in Troodos’s Sun Valley. This has been designed to be consistent with the character of the Troodos area, as Andreas Eleftheriou, the head of the Construction Committee for the new building, told "Entrepreneurial Limassol". The construction site of the ski lift was fenced off, but due to the snow, the work was temporarily stopped until the snow melted. "The schedule for its delivery is 19 months, from which the dead periods in the winter will be subtracted," added Mr. Eleftheriou.
The Cyprus Ski Association signed contracts with the construction company for the construction of the new ski slope, on October 20, 2022, at a cost of €3.7 million. Of these, €2 million will be covered by the state. The building will include a ski equipment rental shop, conference room, cafeteria/restaurant of 500 square meters, common areas, and even a loft for the children of the academies. The construction will be dominated by stone, wood and glass, so that the visitor can enjoy the view of the snowy landscape.
The project, in addition to the development of winter tourism, is expected to contribute to the enrichment of summer tourism and the economic development of mountain communities, resulting in the reduction of urbanization and unemployment. According to Andreas Eleftheriou, the Ski Club's planning includes the replacement of the obsolete lifts, in order to completely upgrade the product provided.
As he pointed out, upgrading the elevators is expensive and once the building is completed efforts will be focused on it. At the Troodos Ski Centre, four lifts are operational (3 ski lifts and one chair lift). Mr. Eleftheriou noted that the sport of skiing is showing growth in Cyprus, pointing out that when the old ski resort was built, the number of skiers was limited, while nowadays there are thousands. He further pointed out that the Clubs had between 10 and 12 athletes each, while now there are 40 to 50 athletes, to which the children from the academies of the Ski Clubs are added. Limassol, Nicosia, Troodos, Famagusta and Larnaca have ski clubs.
