"The Comparative Advantages of Cypriot Shipping in Relation to Competition - WE SAIL THE FLAG" is the title of a school competition launched by the "Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies" unit of the Post-Graduate Vocational Education and Training Institutes . The competition is under the auspices of the Deputy Shipping Ministry The aim of the competition is to create links with shipping and to develop students' awareness of the importance of shipping for the Cypriot economy and society. The competition is addressed to students of Lyceums and Technical Schools in the Limassol district, with the aim of encouraging them to write an article on the above topic for their school newsletter.
The competition also aims to inform students about the field of shipping, to encourage them to engage in research using specialized information sources on topics related to the field of shipping, to develop creative and critical thinking and writing skills, as well as the development of teamwork skills. The awards are an offer of Salamis Cruises:, €500 (First Prize), € 300 (Second Prize) and €200 (Third Prize). The awards will be given out to the top students in a ceremony on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
This competition makes part of an information and awareness campaign for young people in the shipping sector. The shipping sector, a pillar of the economy since 1974, accounts for at least 6% of Gross Domestic Product. Limassol is one of the largest ship management centers in the world, hosting as it is more than 100 ship management companies as well as a variety of companies in the wider shipping sector. Today, about 7,000 people are employed in the shipping and transportation industries, representing about 2,5% of the total human resources.
