Heroes Square without stairs and with a new look – Delivery expected by mid-June

The redevelopment project of Heroes Square and the surrounding streets is expected to be delivered within June, with approximately a one-month delay, Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis told “Entrepreneurial Limassol.”

The Mayor stressed that the major difference in the new configuration of the iconic square in the center of Limassol is that there are no longer any stairs, resulting in the creation of a unified surface.

As he noted, the project was originally scheduled to be delivered in early May; however, it has been postponed to June 15. He added that the road in front of the Rialto Theatre is currently being completed, while improved connectivity has been achieved between the theatre’s stairs and the square.

According to the Mayor, the kiosks in the square—previously in a state of deterioration—are being reconstructed at the same time. These are listed buildings and, in cooperation with the relevant Department, it was decided to rebuild them, a development that contributed to delays in the project’s progress. He added that these works will be completed soon, while the stormwater retention tank being constructed in the southern part of the square is also pending completion.

Regarding the decision of the Municipal Council to extend the redevelopment works of Heroes Square towards the Church of the Holy Trinity, to also include the square area west of the church, Mr. Armeftis said that efforts were made to reach an agreement with the Ecclesiastical Committee and the Metropolis of Limassol. The aim was to expand the square by relocating the church’s fence eastwards, thereby doubling the available space. However, no agreement has been reached so far.

He noted that the reconstruction of this particular square will require an amount of €400,000 to €500,000 and added that a new effort will be made in the coming period, as the Municipality seeks cooperation and there has been no final refusal on the part of the Church. He also pointed out that a clear picture of the final design is required for the completion of the study. As he explained, the architects have completed the preliminary designs and what mainly remains is the construction aspect. The goal is the functional and aesthetic integration of the two squares, and the designs are being prepared by the same consultants, as the project is considered a continuation of the existing intervention in Heroes Square.

At the signing of the contracts for the redevelopment of Heroes Square and its adjacent streets in August 2024, it was emphasized that the square is being upgraded with a focus on accessibility and limiting vehicle use, while an exhibition space is also being created in the basement of the monument.

Essentially, as stated, “the square is returned to pedestrians and improved connectivity with the Rialto Theatre is achieved, facilitating outdoor events.”

The project, with a budget of €3.9 million plus VAT, is being implemented within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021–2027,” co-funded by the European Union.

The architectural study for the project, by Socrates Stratis and Christos Passadakis, was selected through an architectural competition.

The proposal, titled “Square of Everyday Heroes,” includes infrastructure for the reconfiguration of the space and structures that encourage the inclusivity of the public space.

The square is organized around a “smart” surface, which functions as a grid of infrastructure for social and ecological processes. Through a sustainable stormwater management system, the surface will collect part of the runoff, slow down another part, filter it, and store it in a tank beneath its surface.

The design pattern allows for the creation of four “oases” around the existing kiosks.

Among other elements, the designers propose structures such as the “Small Rialto,” the “Greenhouse of Ideas for All,” the “Toy Library,” the “Plant Greenhouse,” as well as “hanging gardens” above the new public restrooms.

At the same time, adequate dining space is created in front of cafés and restaurants through the relocation of the existing route and the pedestrianization of sections of the streets surrounding Heroes Square.
