On Thursday, November 23, the Cyprus Space Exploration Organization (CSEO) and the Cyprus Maritime and Maritime Institute (CMMI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding based on the use of space technologies for the protection of the marine environment, in the presence of Mr. Konstantinos Giorkatzis, Mayor of Nicosia, Iasona Iasonidis, Deputy Mayor of Larnaca, Ioannis Typaldos, Director of the Integrated Marine Ecosystem Directorate of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, Eleni Loukaidou, representative of the Nicosia Municipal Group of DISY, and Efi Xanthou, Deputy President of the Environmentalists' Movement-Citizens' Cooperation. It is the first time that two Cypriot research organizations have officially collaborated for such an ambitious goal.
The effects of climate change on the marine environment is a major issue worldwide. The seas have always played a regulatory role in the temperature of the planet as they absorb both solar heat and that which is a result of human activity. In recent years, there has been an alarming rise in sea temperatures, threatening marine life and intensifying global weather patterns.
Advanced space technologies offer the ability to monitor terrestrial weather conditions over large areas, as well as reporting human-made activities and environmental disasters, and indicators of marine life and its health.
The Memorandum of Understanding, signed by Mr. Giorgos A. Danos, President of CSEO, and Zacharias Siokouros, CEO of CMMI, at CSEO's headquarters in the heart of the capital, aims to use and develop space and marine technologies for research and consequent joint actions in the areas of the blue economy. The ultimate goal is the protection of our immediate environment, the creation of best practices and the promotion of sustainable development. Goals that have the potential to be applied across the planet.
Immediately after the signing ceremony, the executives of the two organizations met in a working group for the immediate start of the cooperation between them.
