Limassol is pushing for ‘’City’’ infrastructure

Limassol expects much more progress regarding the construction of the Aktaia Odos and infrastructure in the area (dubbed ‘’The City’’), as well as the 2nd phase of the connection of Franklin Roosevelt Avenue with the coastal road, Mayor Nicos Nicolaides stressed to the Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou at a recent meeting, pointing out the huge importance of these projects for Limassol. The government departments involved have promised once again that they will make these a priority.

The Mayor of Limassol told "Entrepreneurial Limassol" that he hopes that an updated plan will be prepared soon, so that the rest of the procedures can proceed and finally unlock these very important projects. Regarding the connection of Franklin Roosevelt to the coastal road, the Municipality has appealed to the court for the demolition of illegal premises in the area and is waiting to obtain a relevant injunction. However, Nicos Nicolaides indicated to the Minister that even if the illegal premises are demolished, there are also some legal ones for which the expropriation process must be initiated for the project to proceed.

"It is inconceivable that such a project should not be placed among the highest priorities of the state services," says Nicos Nicolaides. Limassol Chamber of Commerce & Industry President Andreas Tsouloftas described Aktaia Odos as a huge project, adding that the Chamber has already asked EAC (the Cyprus Electricity Authority) to start studies on issues that fall within its competence, since billions of euro will be invested in the area.

He indicated that for planned projects to proceed, the coastal road (that is Aktaia Odos) must be reconstructed, the boat repair workshops must move to Vasiliko, where space has been designated for them, and the whatever rubble, accumulated over the years, must be removed. "The investors who bought the large pieces of land have already submitted plans, or obtained permits. These are 6 to 7 major projects, which will not start until they see the progress of Aktaia Odos.  They will not proceed with projects in front of an impassable road," he said. Mr. Tsouloftas indicated that the Aktaia Odos is the first major project that the LCCI will discuss with the Minister of Interior at a meeting it has requested.
