From the 18th to the 21st of May 2023 in the coastal municipalities of Ayia Napa, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos we celebrated the European Maritime Day by holding a significant number of events, which are held under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping and supported by the European Commission. Main organizer, the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute. The European Maritime Day was established by the European Commission in 2008 as an annual event where Europe's maritime communities and actors involved in issues, actions and policies related to the Sea and the Sustainable Blue Economy come together to discuss and present the their ideas, projects and achievements, to develop partnerships and joint actions, to be informed about the evolving EU Maritime Policy and to contribute to its shaping.
The central event at pan-European level will take place this year in Brest, France, on 24-25 May 2023. During the celebrations in Cyprus, interactive educational, artistic and theatrical workshops and games, sports activities, demonstrations of innovative marine technologies, beach cleaning under the auspices of the Commissioner for the Environment Ms. Maria Panagiotou and other environmental actions. In addition, there will be photography and painting exhibitions, a recycling exhibition with the support of the Ministry of Culture, guided tours, musical performances, boat trips, workshops for children and competitions, such as 'Boats with recyclable materials' and 'Name a reef'.
The European Maritime Day in Cyprus is addressed to all citizens and especially to children and young people with the aim of informing and raising their awareness about the importance of the sea as well as mobilizing them in terms of the protection of the marine environment. At today's press conference, which was held at the Ayia Napa Marina, a presentation was made of the European day in question as well as the events that will take place in all the coastal municipalities of Cyprus. Specifically, the whole activity was presented by representatives from the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, the Municipality of Ayia Napa, the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute, as well as the Coastal Studies and Research Center.
