Issues related to the wider economic development needs of Limassol, city and district, were the subject of discussion at a recent meeting of the Executive Committee of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the Mayors and the President of the Limassol Communities Union. During the meeting, which lasted more than two hours, several development and other projects were reviewed, which are in progress, are being planned, or should have been planned, with a common finding that Limassol as a whole is lagging behind in terms of public sector investments, with the result that its competitiveness is affected and its wider perspective compromised.
As characteristically observed by the Chamber President Andreas Tsouloftas, the insufficient state investments in Limassol are clearly highlighted in the official government portal "Exandas", with Limassol being consistently in the penultimate position in Cyprus in terms of public investments per capita. Projects reviewed included the Technology Park, the Second Pole of the Cyprus University of Technology, the coastal road between the Marina and the New Port (known locally as Aktea Odos), the Northern Bypass, as well as individual projects in each of the Municipalities, and in communities, some of which are progressing, while others are in prolonged stagnation, awaiting government decisions, a level at which gridlock is not at all infrequent. All the participants in the meeting agreed on the need for optimal coordination and the adoption, together with other stakeholders of the city and district, of an aggressive policy in the direction of claiming what Limassol really deserves.
