Vati Green Point in the making

The Limassol Waste Management Exploitation Council (SEDAL) has identified state land bordering the former Vati landfill, to create a large Green Point, since the procedures through the Water Development Department for the creation of such do not seem to be making any headway. A request has been made for the land to be granted by the Interior Ministry through an attachment procedure and the Ministry has notified the Council of its letter to the Land Registry, with instructions to consider the request and proceed with what it takes.

For SEDAL to apply for the Green Point, it will first have to secure the space, while the rest is almost all ready. As soon as the land is secured, an environmental study will be conducted, which will be submitted to the Ministry for approvals, and in the meantime the ordering of the machinery will begin. A shredder will be installed at the site and there will be cooperation with a composting unit, which will receive the shredded prunings. As it was emphasized to ‘’Entrpreneurial Limassol’’, SEDAL is literally running to speed up the project, so that the collection of prunings can get under way. There is currently no such recycling facility Greater Limassol, an area with a multitude of green spaces), resulting in the accumulation of huge volumes whose management constitutes a major problem.

The new Green Point will also cater for bulky waste (such as sofas and mattresses) for which there is also a problem with the unit handling them, as well as large electrical appliances. As indicated to us, the Green Point in Eftagonia, which was intended to be operated by the Water Development Department last April, is now estimated to be implemented within 2023, while it is still not known when the remaining 8 Green Points requested by the Limassol district will proceed.

SEDAL officials told ‘’Entrepreneurial Limassol’’ that it is inconceivable that there should be such a delay, while it has been seen in practice that the Green Points have a positive role to play, they serve the citizens and guide them regarding what they will be asked to implement when sorting is implemented at the source and the pay as you throw principle goes into effect. Finally, they emphasized the need for Cyprus to obtain, with the help of the state, recyclers with the right infrastructure to carry out the entire process, otherwise it is not possible to achieve the desired result.
