The Old Port of Limassol was constructed in the 1950s during British rule. It operated as a supplement to the port of Famagusta and served the country’s commercial and passenger traffic for approximately two decades.
With the construction of the new Port of Limassol in 1973, and due to developments in the shipping industry, its use gradually declined, and from 1979 it ceased to play any role in maritime activities.
Construction works for the major redevelopment and upgrading project of the Old Port of Limassol began in 2010 and were completed in 2014, at a cost of seventeen million euros.
The project included the redevelopment of the old port area and the construction of 20 buildings with a total area of 5,800 square metres, combining traditional, cultural and commercial uses. These include restaurants, snack bars, bars, shops, a fish market, a club, offices of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, and seven-storey office buildings with a total area of approximately 1,500 sq.m.
The project was completed with the construction of a pedestrian bridge, the development of outdoor areas with squares and fountains, landscaping, pedestrian walkways, cycle paths and parking spaces.
The Old Port of Limassol, with its new cosmopolitan character, has become part of everyday life for locals and visitors alike and is a popular attraction for all ages.
At the main square of the Old Port of Limassol, as well as at the indoor multipurpose venue (Building “Plefsi”), various charitable, cultural, social, musical and sporting events are regularly organised, aiming to attract both locals and visitors for leisure and entertainment.
