Works on the first phase, renovation of the GSO Sports Centre which was effectively abandoned for a long time, will get under way at the beginning of 2022. The deadline for submission of bids, as Mayor Nicos Nicolaides stated to "Entrepreneurial Limassol", expired on December 3, and by January the project will be awarded, which includes the maintenance of the sports facilities and the square of the sports centre, aiming to revive them both by the summer. Bids for the second phase of the project, which refers to the configuration of the facilities that will house the gym of Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and the GSO Museum of Sports History, will be announced in early 2022.
Work on the first phase will last five months and on the second, one and a half years. Along with the offers for the 2nd phase, the Limassol Municipality will announce offers for the management of the GSO raised café/restaurant, which has also been abandoned for years, together with the canteen that will operate in the area, with the expectation of supporting the sports and social activity in the area.
The agreement for the renovation of the Sports Centre was signed in December 2019, by the Limassol Municipality, CUT and the Cypris Sports Organization. To facilitate implementation of the projects, the government has provided €1,5 million worth of financial support. With the agreement, the Municipality and CUT took over the management of the sports centre for a period of ten years, which will be renewed every five years. CUT will manage the sports infrastructure for use by students and citizens, while the Municipality will take over the management of the other spaces, including the Sports Museum.
