For one day, Gladstonos Street took on a different character, as the road filled with people, activities and creative experiences for children and families. With a strong turnout, particularly among families with children, Car-Free Day was held on Sunday, 20 September, on Gladstonos Street, as part of European Mobility Week 2026. The event was organised by the Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company (Limassol Tourism Board), with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Municipality of Limassol, Friends of the Earth Cyprus and OPU – Organization for Positive Urbanism.
A particularly special moment of the event was the participation of students from the 3rd Primary School of Limassol, who took part in the “Mobility for Everyone” drawing competition organised by the Limassol Tourism Board as part of European Mobility Week. Through their drawings, the children expressed their vision of a safer and more people-friendly city. The event also included an award ceremony for the students who were recognised, creating a particularly memorable moment for the children, teachers and their families.
The President of the Limassol Tourism Board, Mr Andreas Tsouloftas, highlighted the Board’s longstanding participation in and support for initiatives promoting sustainable mobility, emphasising its connection both to residents’ quality of life and to Limassol’s appeal as a modern and sustainable tourism destination. As he noted, a city where residents and visitors can walk safely, use bicycles and public transport, and have easy access to points of interest is a city that offers a better everyday experience and a more authentic experience for its visitors.
Another important part of the event was the presentation of the city’s Masterplan, as part of the collaboration between the Municipality of Limassol, the Municipality of Amathunta and the Municipality of Polemidia, together with the University of Cyprus and Frederick University. The collaboration focuses on the development of an integrated plan for sustainable mobility, spatial and urban regeneration, as well as the preparation of pilot interventions aimed at creating safer, more accessible and climate-neutral mobility solutions.
