The first summer school «Blue Youth Camp, Agia Napa»

The first summer school 'Blue Youth Camp, Ayia Napa', that took place on the 8th – 13th July at the summer camp facilities of the Women Lyceum Club (Lykeion Ellinidon) in Ayia Napa, proved to be a great success. Organiser the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) in collaboration with the Women Lyceum Club of Famagusta.

During the Blue Youth Camp children had the opportunity to become familiar with the marine ecosystem and to learn about professions and careers opportunities available in the marine and maritime sectors.

Interactive and experiential workshops, sports activities, and games were part of the six-day recreational and educational event. Experiments were conducted both within and outside the classroom. A short cruise provided children with an opportunity to discuss and observe marine life in the Mediterranean region, including seals, turtles, and large meadows of Posidonia oceanica. Under the guidance of the Institute's researchers and  scientists, the children enjoyed swimming and playing.

Their field trip at the 'Thalassa' museum included a Treasure Hunt focusing on underwater archaeology and shipbuilding history. In addition to swimming, rowing, canoeing, and windsurfing, beach volleyball and tennis the nautical activities were designed to develop communication and teamwork skills among participants.

Special thanks go to our external partners, the 'Thalassa' museum, presenter Mr. Konstantinos Nikolaou, the 21st Naval Scouts System of Paralimni, Team Leaders, as well as CYMEPA and Active Zone Outdoor, for their contribution leading up to the event’s success and great impact.

The 'Blue Youth Camp' initiative is designed to facilitate the dissemination of applied research outcomes, as well as scientific knowledge developed at the Institute by utilising an educational approach based on physical activity, playful learning, and children’s participation. Our goal is to understand the importance of marine and ocean ecosystems, recognise the dangers they face from pollution, and advocate for their protection.

Following this year's success, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute will seek to organise on an annual basis the Blue Youth Camp summer school, enriching each time its content and aiming for its expansion.
