A series of road projects are being promoted by the Municipalities of Germasogeia and Agios Athanasios with the aim of alleviating traffic congestion in the developing area with the Schools and the German Medical Center. The most important of these is, of course, the northern bypass, on the boundaries of the two municipalities, with efforts under way to speed it up.
As the Mayor of Germasogia, Kyriakos Xydias, told "Entrepreneurial Limassol", the local authorities surveyed the road and the Town Planning Department completed the master plan which has been submitted to the authority in charge of Traffic Studies. There have been comments and corrections which will be included in the final version of the masterplan, which is expected to be adopted before the end of the year. Once this happens, and as per the agreement of the Minister of Transport, the Public Works will proceed with a tender for the construction works. The Minister was also asked to include the necessary amounts in the budgets.
The Mayor of Germasogia estimates that actual work on the project will begin in the next two years. An equally necessary project being promoted is the creation of the vertical road that will connect the area of the schools with the coastal road at the intersection of Pizza Hut. As Kyriakos Xydias told us, many problems have been solved regarding the course of the road and existing developments, but still to be decided is what to do with the Mavrellis bridge on the bypass, an issue that is under study.
On Nikis Avenue, which passes next to the Sfalangiotissa cemetery, the Agios Athanasios municipality promotes (as a temporary solution) the construction of a roundabout, at the junction with Patron Street, which connects it with Germasogia. The Municipality has prepared and forwarded the tender documents for the project to Public Works. In October, it will announce a tender to find designers who will prepare the construction plans, with the aim for construction work to begin before the end of 2024.
It is expected to cost €500,000 of which €200,000 will be paid by an adjacent project of the Kition Metropolis The project also provides for the extension of street lighting on Nikis Street.
In the meantime, the Municipality of Agios Athanasios is also preparing plans to improve the small roundabout adjacent to "Gefsi" restaurant, which connects Nikis Street with the Agios Athanasios junction on the bypass.
