Public transport for afternoon student services

The Limassol Transport Company (EMEL) has concluded agreements with the Municipalities of Ypsonas and Germasogeia for the delineation of circular routes in their areas of jurisdiction, for the service of students who move in the afternoon to schools and private lessons. This is an effort to breathe life into Public Transport with the advent of new buses (mainly small and flexible), said the Mayor of Ypsonas, Pantelis Georgiou. He added that two circular routes will be created within the Municipality that will transport children to and from schools and tutoring schools in the afternoon.

"It is one of the actions that we believe will contribute to achieving the goals regarding Sustainable Urban Mobility", added Pantelis Georgiou. The Mayor of Ypsonas announced that the Local Authority is proceeding with the installation of bus stops/shelters (the first 10 have been approved by the Ministry of Transport), in order to create transfer areas between the internal circular routes and those starting from Episkopi and ending in the center of Limassol.

Germasogia Mayor, Kyriakos Xydias, told us that the Municipality is promoting with EMEL the creation of a route that connects the municipality core with the coastal road and passes through streets where students have afternoon activities (Agia Paraskevi, Christaki Kranou and Edessis), so that during peak hours, vehicle traffic is reduced. As well as the routing of buses in the evening hours, to transport citizens from the large parking lots to the tourist and core areas (on the bed of Amathos river and opposite the former Skaros tavern), to restaurants and entertainment venues, which do not have parking spaces.

Furthermore, according to Kyriakos Xydias, an attempt will be made to connect the advanced Electronic Parking System of the Municipality with the corresponding system of EMEL, which is now under creation. The Local Authority has agreed with the Ministry of Transport to provide incentives to citizens who demonstrably leave the car and use a bicycle or bus.  "With EMEL we agreed to provide citizens with free bus tickets or parking," added Kyriakos Xydias. In the near future, EMEL and the Municipalities will get together in order to implement the relevant agreements as soon as possible.
