The issue of the Limassol Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) was the sole item on the agenda of a recent extraordinary session of the Board of Directors of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The guest at the session was Evi Anagiotou, head of the Mobility Department at the Ministry of Transport, who presented on screen the main aspects of SUMP, what it is, what it is not, its main aims and ways of implementing it within specific timetables.
Ms. Anagiotou noted that such plans, both in Cyprus and in other European countries, have the main purpose of offering the citizen alternative transport options (besides the private car, which, especially in Cyprus, is used excessively). Furthermore, because the transport sector places a significant burden on the environment, the whole issue also directly affects the environmental obligations of Cyprus vis-à-vis the European Union.
Chamber President Andreas Tsouloftas and the Board thanked Ms. Anagiotou for her presence, and exchanged opinions and concerns with her, regarding possible optimal solutions and practices that will allow the transition to the new regime provided for by SUMP the smoothest possible way.
