The Limassol Council of Mayors are proceeding with the creation of a Metropolitan Park, aiming at the protection of the environment, the alleviation of the effects of the huge development that takes place in the city and the promotion of sustainable urban development. As the President of the Council, Limassol Mayor Nicos Nicolaides stated in "Entrepreneurial Limassol", the initiative was taken by the Limassol Municipality, which submitted the proposal to the other Municipalities for the creation of a park that will extend to all six of them.
The Council assigned to a researcher a preliminary study on the current situation and the areas offered for the green lung that will start from the area of the Polemidia dam (west) and will reach the dam of Germasogeia (east). As Mr. Nicolaides explained, the Metropolitan Park will enclose Limassol with a green zone, which will not be continuous, but will consist of green areas that will be interconnected with each other.
With the preliminary study that has been carried out in hand, the Municipalities of greater Limassol will consult with the relevant government departments for the necessary modifications of the local plans, to include provisions that will facilitate the creation of the peri-urban park. The first part of the study has been presented to the Council and the researcher was requested to complete it in order to be presented in public consultation, "so that people know all aspects of this very large action", stressed Mr. Nicolaides.
The Mayor of Limassol estimated that the creation of the Metropolitan Park is expected to begin around 2026 and that its full development could take fifteen years. The researchers have evaluated various areas and have categorized them according to the possibilities of their exploitation, the type of greenery in each section, irrigation and how the development of the parts that will compose the peri-urban park of greater Limassol will become viable.
