Tenders for projects worth over €20 million will be announced in the coming months by the Limassol Water Board (WBL), aiming to make the network "smart" throughout its area of jurisdiction and also renew it in a large number of problem areas. As stated to "Entrepreneurial Limassol" by the WBL General Manager Socratis Metaxas, a grant of €13 million was secured from the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund, for the installation of smart meters in the premises and sensors in the network, so that there is continuous on-line information on the quality characteristics and water pressure, at the Operations Center at the offices of the WBL, that will also be upgraded.
In this way, the Council will better monitor consumption, whether there are strange fluctuations or leaks, and will identify them promptly. According to Mr. Metaxas, the WBL will announce the relevant tender in the next two months, the project will start in early 2023 and should be completed before the end of 2026. The EU's Cohesion Fund has granted an amount of €7,500,000 for the alteration of the network in problem areas with large water losses. A relevant competition will be announced next month and by the end of the year the works, that will last four years, will get under way.
The areas where the network will be renewed, are mainly coastal, from Limassol to Germasogeia, and further north, to Gladstonos Street. "If the WBL makes good use of these amounts by the EU, I believe that we have reasonable hopes to secure more similar European funds", stressed Mr. Metaxas.
