Issues relating to business cooperation, in conjunction with the Limassol economy, were discussed during a recent visit to the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry by British High Commissioner Ric Todd.
Welcoming Mr. Todd, who was accompanied by the head of the High Commission’sTrade And Investment department, Elena Orphanidou, Limassol Chamber President Costas Galatariotis hailed the excellent cooperation that has long existed between the Chamber and the High Commission. Referring to the latest activities of the Chamber, he singled out the signing of a Memorandum of Understand with the Chamber of Tel-Aviv and Central Israel, pointing out the prospects arising therefrom for business opportunities and cooperation between Limassol and Tel-Aviv entrepreneurs.
Referring to issues of common, Cypro-British interest, Mr. Galatariotis said the Chamber is following with particular interest the process regarding the possibility of development projects within the boundaries of the British bases in Cyprus, and in conjunction with the ongoing effort for the extension of the surface areas of Limassol, in a westerly direction. Commenting on this, Mr. Todd said significant progress had been made, although certain legal issues still needed to be clarified and two sides were working closely in that direction.
The British side also expressed particular interest in the process leading to the implementation of the Scientific and Technological Park at Pentakomo. Mr. Galatariotis said the necessary procedures were proceeding normally, there had been presentations of the project abroad (in the presence of the Limassol Chamber) and all the indications were that the tender documents would be announced shortly. Mr. Todd noted that once the tender documents became known, the Trade and Investment Department of the High Commission would promote those amongst potentially interested British enterprises and organizations.
The British diplomat also sought the opinion of the Limassol Chamber on the current state of the Cyprus economy, and the Limassol economy in particular. The two sides likewise exchanged ideas on the prospects for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.
Apart from President Galatariotis, also attending the meeting on behalf of the Limassol Chamber were Commerce Vice President Andreas Tsouloftas and Board members Demosthenes Mavrellis and Xanthos Nemitsas.
