Louvaras: Green Development with Respect for the environment

Louvaras’s Community Council will proceed with the creation of a Community Park and parking area, at a cost of €1,280,000, although this has not been funded by the EU, and aspires to make it a regional reference point in view of the changes coming up next year in the context of local government (municipalities and communities) reform. Community Council President Panikos Karkallis told "Entrepreneurial Limassol" that the project has matured, building permits have been secured, it will be implemented with state funds and that with the help of the District Officer, construction will begin in 2024, in sections.

As Mr. Karkallis pointed out, the local authority seeks to create a culture of green development, car-free mobility, and respect for the environment at the core of the community and has been the recipient of awards for this. The park will include a children's playground, bicycle area, outdoor mini-football field and gym, covered dining area for 70 people and an outdoor amphitheatre.
As the community head pointed out, the park is adjacent to what is now the community event square and the former Primary School, which has been renovated and houses the Community Council, the Community Clinic and a multi-event hall.

In the "Kakomallis" of Limassol Forest, which is adjacent to the community, there is perhaps the oldest camping site, founded in 1940 by Solomon Panagidis. According to Mr. Karkallis, a plan has been drawn up by the Diocese to which it belongs, to upgrade it, in order to accommodate 60 people. The community, in collaboration with Paraplegic and Disabled organizations, has chosen a site where it will create the first nature trail for the disabled in Cyprus, at a cost of €1 million. A draft has been drawn up and in consultation with the Limassol Development Company, a tender will be announced for the services of a designer, in order to secure permits and funding from the state. The project has been included by the Ministry of Education in its environmental programs, so that schools can visit the site.

With reference to "Commandaria", with Louvaras making part of Designation of Origin area, Panikos Karkallis emphasized that there are supply-related problems and in the last two years grape growers have carried out a green harvest, as a result of which young people are discouraged from entering this field of activity. He also emphasized that the disposal of the product should be a state matter and that if the vines are abandoned, "one spark will be enough to destroy the countryside".
