‘’We are hopeful that the new master plan for the utilization of the Veregaria area in Kato Polemidia will be adopted in February’’, according to the Mayor, Nicos Anastasiou.
Speaking to ‘’Entrepreneurial Limassol’’, the Mayor said the new "Large Scale Plan" has been approved by Town Planning, the Ministry of Interior and has been discussed with the Traffic Studies Agency, while additional traffic studies have also been prepared.
An initial master plan was prepared by the Town Planning Department, but the Kato Polemidia Municipality instructed consultants to evaluate it, and came up with a new, more functional proposal. In the old version, emphasis was placed on the movement of vehicles, but consultants were instructed to reduce that side as much as possible. "In the new plan, we reduced the main highway, narrowed the roads and designed wide sidewalks so that, should the need arise, fire trucks and ambulances move unhindered," Mr. Anastasiou suggested.
In Veregaria, 74000 sq.m. have been granted by the state to the Cyprus University of Technology, which will erect dormitories, research laboratories and sports facilities for students. There is also space of 43000 sq.m. for a Research and Innovation Center, for which there is collaboration involving the Municipality, CUT and the Limassol Chamber. 4000 sq.m. have been granted to Kato Polemidia municipality for building facilities and future new Town Hall. 7000 sq.m. is intended for the new Olympic swimming pool of Limassol, based on a proposal submitted to the Cyprus Sports Organization by the Municipality, the Limassol Nautical Club and CUT.
Nikos Anastasiou singled a space of 52000 sq.m., an area earmarked for a single Public Green Space. "We want to create a large park like the ones we see abroad, with a playground, facilities for adults and senior citizens, sidewalks, bike paths", stressed Nikos Anastasiou. This large park will be connected to the Garyllis linear park, so that people can have the possibility of moving all the way up to the seafront.
