An electronic information system on the availability of municipality-owned parking places in downtown Limassol will soon be fully operational. The system is currently operating on a trial basis (since June 27) and certain weaknesses have been identified during its first weeks of operation. These shortcomings will be resolved very soon and the service provided will be effective and accurate. The system comprises specialized equipment counting the number of incoming and outgoing vehicles in seven municipal parking lots and thus determining and showing on an electronic screen the number of vacant parking spaces at any given time. The parking lots covered by the new system are located at the seaside road west on the old port, in the Limassol Castle area as well as at Andreas Themistocleous street and the vicinity of Heroes Square.
At a later stage, this kind of info will also be available through a smart phone application. For the time being the Municipality has installed additional electronic info screens on major road arteries leading to the city centre, informing the public on the availability of parking spaces. When fully developed, the system will help avert unnecessary hassle from drivers looking for a free parking space, since they will be able to know in advance what parking space they should be heading to before entering the city center.
Speaking to ‘’Entrepreneurial Limassol’’ Limassol municipality chief architect Stelios Stylianides said the whole effort will also have a beneficial effect from an environmental point of view, in that it can prevent traffic congestion and help optimize traffic management in the city centre. The project is being implemented within the framework of the European program CIVITAS, the central coordinating role of which is handled by the Limassol Tourism Development and Promotion Company.
