The Limassol Waste Exploitation and Management Council would like the large green spot in Vati, which has been requested since December 2020 from the Water Development and Environment Departments of the Ministry of Agriculture, to "operate yesterday". This new green spot is intended to serve three streams of waste, prunings, bulky items (such as sofas, mattresses, furniture) and large electrical appliances.
As the President of the Council (Mesa Geitonia Mayor), Doros Antoniou, told "Entrepreneurial Limassol", the goal is to decongest the existing four green spots, given that the wider Limassol area has a lot of green spaces and huge piles of prunings are accumulating, the management of which is highly problematic. Moreover, because the green spots are intended to serve individual citizens, the Council seeks to decongest them from the local authorities who burden them with large volumes, something that will be achieved with the creation of the new space in Vati. The hope is that with the decongestion and better operation of the green spots, mountainous (and not only) areas will be freed from the uncontrolled dumping of waste, which has become a scourge.
"We urgently need the big green point in Vati, but government departments are delaying the completion and expansion of the green points network throughout Cyprus", stressed Mr. Antoniou. Limassol district has requested 9 more green points, including the one in Vati, which is an immediate priority. The main "tool" in Vati will be a large shredder, which will reduce the volume of prunings in order to avoid transportation costs and prepare the waste for the composting plant.
The Waste Management Council has decided to proceed on its own with the Green Point in Vati and is in the process of handing over the land and preparing bidding documents for its creation. In the process, it will seek co-financing from the EU Structural Funds.
