Infrastructure projects will change West Limassol

The year 2019 will witness major infrastructure projects in the underdeveloped western districts of Limassol.

Large and small projects that have begun to materialize or are planned to begin within 2019, will transform the downgraded core of the western side of the city. The areas of Agios Antonios and Agios Ioannis have already been turned into a vast construction site, with five projects in progress and five at the starting point. The main project, that is part of the broader "Limassol 2020" urban interventions program for the revitalization of the area, is the rehabilitation of the main Misiaouli & Kavazoglou road. The project, with a budget of €5,2 million, was launched in December and is expected to be concluded in the next two years.

The second project underway is the redevelopment of the Syntagma Square in the old port and Ermou Street, which will become a pedestrians only street. The project, launched last October, is expected to be completed in April. In October, work got under way rebuilding Filellinon Square. Also under way is the ‘Green Walk’ project as well as work to improve the facade of buildings in the area of Agios Antonios, which began last November and is expected to be completed in 18 months.

By April the expansion of the Garylis Linear Park is expected to begin along the streets of Pallas, Democracy and Alexandria leading to the Karnagio area. The project will include a cycling route, widening of pavements, green areas and new lighting. The timetable for work to be completed is about two years.

At the same time, the regeneration of Anagenniseos Square is expected to begin, to be completed by the end of the year. In February, offers were submitted for another important project to be carried out in the area, that is the restoration of the three municipal blocks of flats at Misiaouli & Kavazoglou, which will be turned into a Municipal Multifunctional Center. The timetable for the work is two years, with a budget of €3 million. At the same time, tenders were announced for the creation of a Center for the elderly on Filellinon street.

In March, the tender for the first environmental neighborhood of Limassol will be announced, which will be created in the Omonia–Zakaki area. The project, which is expected to be implemented in the second half of 2019, has already secured the green light from the Traffic Research Operator. Its aim is to create a suitable environment where residents will travel safely and the use of private cars will be discouraged.
