A tender competition is to be launched shortly for the Limassol-Saittas motorway, making it the first government project for the new year. The tender for the first phase of the new motorway, that will connect the mountain communities and Limassol city, will be announced by the end of February.
Phase A1, with a budgeted cost of €26,2 million will cover the Polemidia-Palodia section, with a length of 3.7 km, from the Palais de Sport to the Palodia exit. According to the Department of Public Works, if no appeal is lodged with the Tenders Review Authority, construction work, expected to last 30 months, will begin no later than September this year. The last procedural matter pending was the disclosure of the valuation of expropriations by the Land Registry Department, which were published a few days ago after the approval by the Council of Ministers.
At the same time, the tender documents were sent to the Treasury of the Republic for final review. The cost of the expropriations, as stated to "Entrepreneurial Limassol" by the inspector of the Department of Public Works, Konstantia Argyrou, amounts to €745.000. This part was decided to be treated as a matter of priority as it has been characterized as a black spot in terms of road safety and the police had called for drastic measures to mitigate the problem. The new road will include two lanes per direction and a dividing parapet.
The new route, totaling 22,5 km, will follow the existing road to Alassa. Before the Zygos bridge, a new route to the east of the existing road will be created, bypassing Alassa, Lania and Trimiklini and ending at Saittas. The design of the project includes four uneven junctions: at Palodia, Alassa, Monagri and Agios Mamas, three semi junctions and the Saittas roundabout. The project also includes other works as for example a 310-meter long tunnel in the Saittas area.
