Cyclical economy for sustainable development

The necessity of the cyclical economy was at the centre of an event by the title "Zero Waste to Landfill", hosted recently at the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).  Addressing the event, which was co-organized by the Chamber and the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment, LCCI Commerce Vice President Andreas Tsouloftas highlighted the importance of the cyclical economy towards the objective of sustainable development. He noted, moreover, that efforts already made in that direction notwithstanding, there is still much work to be done as Cyprus continues to produce, on a per capita basis, massive quantities of waste.

In her address Environment Commissioner Ioanna Panayiotou singled out the continuous efforts made in pursuit of the zero waste to landfill objective, pointing that there was much that could and ought to be done, both on the part of local and other authorities and on the part of enterprises.

There followed presentations, one by the Open University Lecturer Dr Antonis Zorbas, on the  components and the importance of cyclical economy, and by the head of Cyta’s Department of Corporate Social Responsibility Theodoulos Makriyiannis, on the ways by means of which Cyta   has effectively achieved Zero Waste to Landfill.
